Grass Rubbing?

While out in the yard, my chi's will sniff the ground really stick their noses in there and then try and roll over and rub their backs on that spot.  Anyone know what they are doing?

Back rubbing on grass is often mistaken for a dog having a good scratch at the hard-to-reach places, but in fact it is more likely that your Chis are scent marking the area.  Dogs have scent glands that they use to mark their 'territory' to ward other dogs off by rubbing themselves on grass/trees/furniture/you(!)

I'd be interested though to hear what others have to say about it as this is just my general understanding of what you described.

Either what Jess said or they rub around in markings of other dogs/animals.  So beware what they are rolling around in, sometimes it is not always what you expect!!!!  But it is a normal behaviour.

What Jess said, and Sattie too! Definitely be careful of what they roll in! My bf and I go camping alot, and his Gringo rolled in dead fish, my crested rolled in a pile of bear poo and ruined a really nice puppy jacket he had on... all in ONE weekend!! Ack!! LOL.

Oh gosh, I can really sympathise with you there Mia!  I once had a dog who would habitually roll in Beadger poop.  I dont know whether or not you've ever smelt it or not, and I've never smelt Bear poop (as the only Bears we have here are in the Zoos) but Badger number twos are something else!  Phoo!  I lost track of how many baths I gave that dog due to the Badger poop!

Oh Jess... sounds about as bad as bear poo... LOL. Yoshi was the one who rolled in it, and it had been all over the inside of his new coat... and in his leather collar, all over the place!! Bear poop is sort of like a giant pile of cat poo. I had to trash the shirt, and give him a bath in cold water cuz we didnt have any access to warm water. Then I wrapped him in a towl and stuck in in our camping trailer... he still smelled like poop through the ENTIRE camping weekend... than I proceeded to light into Tony's tail for letting him out without a leash! LOL. He totally knows better.

LOL Mia! My girlies like finding dead frogs and worms to roll around in. I am sure they are rolling in some sort of poop too. Chi Ladies ~ NOT!

From my experience....when they roll in something...it can be anything from a dead worm to dog poop....

I think they do it because they like the smell....
