Chimi being neutered....

Alright... I know that I'm just being a wuss about this... but I'am really REALLY afraid of having Chimi neutered.

I once worked in a vet's office, so I know how critical it is to monitor dogs under anestesia (sp?) and all that, and the little dogs and the big dogs are the ones that we always had to worry about. I have decided to have Chimi neutered, and since he's only 3lbs... I'm soooooo scared of the people at our vets office messing up or something. They seem like good people and they are very professional... BUT, every time I take Chim in there one of the techs almost drops him because he is so squirmy. Shouldnt they know how to correctly hold a tiny dog? This is a vet's office in the city... alot of people have tiny dogs. But even when they cant do something like that (which should be a simple but careful task) how can I trust them to take care of him when he's going to be neutered? I feel like I cant trust them.

The vet I use to work for said that if I scheduled an appt. at his new practice than he would neuter Chimi himself. It is about an hour and a half drive... but I'm thinking it's worth it. I've seen the guy work, and I am very familiar with they way he does things, and he would probably even let me stay in the back to watch the surgery be done - and to be there when Chimi wakes up. That would be really nice.

Alot of other people I know are telling me that I am just over reacting and being too much of a mommy. (Is there even such thing as being too much of a mommy to your chi?) But really, I've never had a dog this small, so naturally... I'M TERRIFIED. I've even cried once already just thinking about all of the things that could happen. I just really need to chill out. LOL.

Could everyone let me know how all of their spay/neuter surgeries went with their chis? Maybe if I get some opinions from people that actually know about this, then I will feel a lot better. Was it easy? Were there any complications? Did you decide to not have your chi spayed/neutered?

Thanks!
Mia

Mia... all of my girlies are spayed except for Coco. I haven't gotten her spayed as of yet b/c I am not sure if I am going to let her have a litter. But I do know how nervous you can get when one of your lil babies are gone to have surgery. Believe me, I was on pins and needles for all three and shopped around to see who would give the best care. I ended up with the most expensive vet in our area but nothing is too expensive when it is dealing with my girls. The vet that my hubby uses for our Lab wanted to keep the chi's over night after surgery, which I wasn't comfortable with as NO ONE would be with the pups over night!!! I was told that they would heal on their own in the cage. Ummm hello.. what if there complications. Anywho.. I opted for another vet who kept them for the day under observation and I picked them up at the end of the day so I can baby them for recovery. I was really affraid of my Molly getting spayed though b/c she has a grade three heart murmur. They had to treat her with extra care and all turned out well. Maybe getting lil Chimi neutered my help with his new found 'protectiveness' though. I will send hugs and kisses your way b/c I know it is such a nerve wracking, at least for  me, experience.

Mia, I can imagine how you must be feeling and I feel for you a lot honey.  My thoughts on it would be to go to the Vet who makes you most comfortable.  If it is extra travel or expense then so be it as nothing is too much for your peace of mind and your baby.  Of course you cant be too much of a Mummy when it comes to your Chimi!  If you're at all unhappy about your regular Vet performing this op, then dont let them do it.

You could, if it'd make you feel easier about it, wait til Chimi is a little older.  He's likely to make 4-5lbs right?  You could wait til he's reached that weight.  I cant think of any harm it could cost him and it might be easier on you.

Whatever you decide to do, please know that we are right behind you all the way.  You can vent, or cry, or whatever with us.  Any time.

Yep.... worry worry worry!!!  I know exactly how you feel.  And if you are not comfortable or do not trust the vet, then by no means would I take my dog there.  I am kinda a "gut instinct" type person and if it don't feel right, then don't take Chimi there.  If you have to drive further away to find someone you do trust, then it is worth it to me.

I have been using the same vet for about 8 years now.  And I really like her.  She is good to my dogs and I trust that they are in the best care.  When I had Binks neutered, I know I was very concerned and worried.  The funny part is that when I got the little guy home (several hours after his surgery) he did not miss a beat.  He was running and jumping and you could not even tell that he had JUST had his you know what removed!!!!  He has been fine ever since.  (He is laying in my lap, Boots is laying beside me and we are all 3 sitting in front of the space heater!)  Now that is bliss!!!

Heh... thanks alot guys. I do feel abit better now, and you let me know that it's alright to ignore the people that are telling me to just take him to his regular vet and get it over with. I think I will take him up to the other vet that I worked for, that way I can be there and all.

But then, like Jess said, I think I will wait until Chimi gets bigger too. Yeah, he should be about 4 to 4 1/2 lbs... hopefully even a little bigger. I dont mind if he breaks the standard much... once he gets bigger, he'll get stronger!!

Good thinking girl!  I think if Chimi was my dog I think Id wait too.  To me the extra mile is always worth it, and like Sttie I am a gut instinct girl.  Let us know when you're going to do it when the time comes, wont you?

Will do Jess... I'll post something when it's going on... because I'll be sitting here all night (I think that the vet I'm taking to will hold him all night) wondering if he's okay and crying...

But on a good note... I'm picking up Chimi's papers from a friend of mine on Tuesday!!! She managed to get them for me!!!
