Well, not sure about you gals, but I know there are certain things that happen that get my dogs to barking and howling. (Deb, I can only imagine what it would be like at your house when this happens.) One thing that will get my boys going is sirens passing by the house. The little ears prick up, and they start gettin all squirrly, and then comes the whimpering, then howling!
The oddest thing that sets Binks off is the sound of monkeys on TV. Of course these days there are so many commercials with chimps in them, or if you happen to be watching Animal Planet, you get your fair share there. But as soon as a monkey chatters on TV... Binks is off!!! He runs around the TV trying to find the critter and looks at the TV bewildered! We call Binks the Chimp Hunter!!!
Well.. in our household knocks on the door drives my girlies batty... thank gawd we live in a rural area. Jazzy starts, hair up on her back, and sets the rest of them off. I do the dog whisperer (cesar milan) 'shhhh' and that usually stops them.
When the girls stay at my parents when we are both working, the sirens set them off.
I don't help out either. I sometimes say 'I love you' in a howly tone and that sets of Molly. Then it is a howl-a-thon in the house. Its kinda cute if you don't have a migraine!
So far what sets Rufus off is the door bell ringing. I think he assumes it's company coming to see him! For the first couple of weeks we had him, that's the only time the doorbell rang. He gets all excited, barking and wriggling (and a little bit of excited piddle!). He actually looks disappointed when no-one comes into RufusWorld to see him!
His playpen is set up in the TV room, so he hears TV all the time and doesn't react to anything on there so far!
Haven't had any sirens go by - don't know if he'll react.
Ellie gets set of by dogs barking in teh park oposite our house. If they bark, so does Ellie! She will also bark at other dogs in the street; highly embarressing! But thank God she's only got half of the 'yappy snappy little dog' qualities!
She also gets stirred up by the door bell. But the funny thing is our doorbell is not the kind that sets her off the most. When I first brought Ellie home I stayed with my Mum for four weeks and her doorbell was just a loud buzz, and Ellie still reacts strongly to that sound. Even if it's just on the tv! When our doorbell, which is a 'ding-dong' sound, goes she gets terribly excited and bounces around because she always expects it to be James!
Sattie, Ellie also reacts to sounds from the tv! When a dog barks, or a monkey screams she will sit up and tilt her head in that funny little way that Ellie does! It's so funny!
I kinda forgot about the doorbell, but they do go bonkers over the door bell. Binks attacks the door and when you go to open the door, he just loses it! It is halarious!!
That's so funny, cos Ellie has absolutely no idea at all what it means if there's a knock on the door! I think barking would be the last thing she'd think of doing! x
funniest thing happened just now..i was reading all these posts and trying to think of what makes dolly crazy..well i dunno what she just heard or what but she took off thru the house barking like a mad dog..i didnt hear anything or see anything..
Mmm, that's another thing, phantom strangers! Ellie does this too, mainly at meal times. Every night, without fail, just as we sit down to eat our evening meal, Ellie will suddenly be absolutely certain there is something, anything to bark at! Every time! What is that about?! x
I have noticed this same "condition" with my two... apparently there is a boogie man or something stalking them cuz they do light up at practically nothing!
Well lets see. The door knocking for sure. Chuwee will also bark if our neighbors dog is outside in their yard barking. This also sets Zip off, so there is double the fun. If hubby and I are wrestling around or goofing around with each other, they both bark at that. Don't touch da mama..lol Sometimes in the night, Chuwee will hear something down the hallway and he will take off out of his bed barking and growling. I guess we have the same phantoms that y'all have, and they only come out at 2 or 3 in the morning.
When our neighbor lets his standard poodle up on our front lawn everybody looses it! Envy looses it when there is a stranger in the house, I had someone visiting over night a week ago, and every time they moved she growled. She is not agressive infact very submisive, but does not like strangers in her house.

hmmmm, if Daisy starts barking then Harley goes nuts too. I can't think of anything else but its so cute if Harley sees something moving on TV he will sit there and watch it.
I don't help out either. I sometimes say 'I love you' in a howly tone and that sets of Molly. Then it is a howl-a-thon in the house. Its kinda cute if you don't have a migraine!
I do that too!!! I love seeing his little mouth try to imitate what I am doing :)
The doorbell also gets Houdini going. He's actually pretty laid back until the pizza person comes lol
Chimi has only recently started this barking thing... and it is happening more and more often as he gets older. I thought for a while he would never bark!
Right now I stay in my mom's basement, and when he can hear people outside of the house he runs to the tiny window over the washer and dryer and raises a major stink.
He also dislikes me speaking to strange men on the street. He stands on my feet and barks at them, even if we are just having a friendly conversation! Guess my boyfriend has nothing to worry about. LOL.
Also in the yard at my boyfriend's house. He notices people walking by the fence, and he barks more during the night than during the day if we are out there.
My boyfriend wears baseball caps all of the time, and occasionally if Chimi sees Tony without his cap, he loses it!
And finally, Chimi enjoys watching alot of T.V. and watching me play video games. When there is a fight on the television he barks and howls like he wants them to stop. But recently (as he grows into his hormones) he's been barking a little more aggressively at the television when there is a fight happening. LOL.

All 3 of my dogs go crazy if some says (or they hear on t.v.) "Hi" or "Bye" (they assume we have company or someone is leaving) or if my kids say,"Dad (Mom or whoever) is home!". Even if the person was home all along they still bark like mad. I have only had Ashley for 2 weeks so she isn't quite use to the children since she had never been around any previously so she still barks at my 5 year old and when she does Mia (my Yorkie/Poodle X) and Lucy start yelping and barking at her.
sattie wrote: They are beautiful!!!!!! I guess HI and BYE are fairly common words!! HA! Lots of barkin in your house huh?
Oooooooooh yes! I also have 2 boys (kids) ages 5 and 6 that LOVE to get the dogs all running around barking like crazy and do so at every opportunity. It's funny but the noise no longer bothers me but visitors don't stay long, lol
Crazy Chimi Update - Well... lately whats been setting Chimi off has been EVERYTHING!! From a new person entering the house, to a bag rolling down the street. LOL. It's like he just discovered that he could bark or something!! And he definitely doesnt like anything or anyone coming near his momma! LOL.
