Ears

I have just noticed that I think Bella is the only chi here with floppy ears. Does anyone else have a floppy ear chi? Do you think they will ever stand? She is 8 months now and they have stood about half way but the top half flaps over.

Hey, don't sweat the floppy ears.  Binks had them for the longest time and I learned that it is because they are teething.  I use to tape Bink's ears up becase they would not stand straight, but they started to stand up on their own.

Here is one where I use to tape them up, I would not suggest that you need to do this.

His ears sag every now and then... but usually when he has been napping...

Don't worry.. Neko went around with floppy ears for a long time... Now they stand about 75% of the time... Some just take longer than others I think.. Bella is soooo adorable... Deb

Madison has floppy ears :D  They stood straight up until he was 6 months old, and then flopped.  They stand up from time to time now, but usually just flop.

Harleys ears were straight up, then they flopped, now sometimes they are up and sometimes one is a little bit down.

Wow, ALL your replies were really intresting!  I quould've just assumed that if a Chi pup has floppy ears they will remain that way their entire lives, I never would have guessed other wise!    It's funny, you think you know a bit about a subject (such as dogs) then something comes long and shows you that actually there is a whole mountain of things you dont know about it!

Wow! I didn't know that this floppy ear thing was that common. Maybe Bella's ears will stand one day but I do notice they flop more when she is sleeping. I think they are cute up or down but I thought she was the only one with ears like that. Thanks for all your replies.

Sattie, I bet Binks wasn't too fond of the tape. The last pic is so adorable of him.

Hershey is a flop ear.  His were straight for just a couple months almost a year ago, but they have been floppy ever since.  Some will flop and then rise again, some will not.

Binks seemed ok with the tape.... it did not bother him like I thought it would.  The worst thing was taking the tape off... he would end up with no hair on his ears, that is the part I don't think he was fond of!!

The tape stuff was what worried me too sattie, that's why I decided that if Hershey's ears wanted to flop, I'd just leave them alone.  I couldn't stand thinking that he might be uncomfy and irritated by the tape.  His skin is super sensitive anyway.

Yup, Rufus is a floppy ear too! Sometimes they are both straight up (that's true this morning) but other times one or the other flops at the tips. So cute.

All my chi books say the ears usually stay erect once they have all their adult teeth in. If not, I guess that's when you tape them.

We figure whether his ears are floppy or erect, we'll love our Rufus!

Blessings - Lin

All my guys ears stand exept our long coat. You can buy a product called "mole skin" It for human feet, sticky on one side, cut it to fit the ears and stick it in, this will help to gain muscle control over the ears.
