Harley Square Pants

I need your opinions!  Okay Harley and Daisy play really rough(Harley is a different dog when he isn't around Daisy). And he is always barking and grawling when they play and Daisy doesn't.  Is he really mad? Or is he just using his voice bc he can and hes little?  Should I make him stop barking when he does that?

Also another little thing is whenever I am going to pick him up he always runs, and when we are outside with no leash it scares me, bc he'll keep running.

Has this ever happened to any of you?

I wouldn't worry too much about the vocals if I were you.  I expect it's just the way Harley plays.  Unless he's hurting Daisy my advice is to just let them play.

Ellie does that running away thing too.  Like she doesn't want to be picked up.    It's very odd, but I'm afraid I have no advice for you on this subject as I have a similar problem.  Ellie wont run away but she sort of backs off, or hides under something.  Then she'll come up to me as if she wants to be picked up, and bat me with her paws, but then backs off again if I stretch my arms out to her!  We repeat that process until I can catch her.

I might ask a dog psychologist about it actually.  If I do I'll let you know what they advise.

Have you booked your two into an obedience class yet?  A lot of the problems you post about could be solved by doing one.

Love, Jess x

Well for the barking....Beni makes all sorts of wierd noises while playing with Bella but I can tell he is just playing. Harley is probably just playing but I would definitely make sure he is not hurting Daisy. Sometimes mine yelp while playing but I think it is cause they accidently hurt each other but not bad.

For the running away....mine try that to but they won't run to far from me or they get scared and come back. I live on 5 acres and don't have to worry about cars. One little trick I learned to get mine to come right away is yell TREAT!!! and boy they come inside in a flash and of course I really have to give them a treat for it.

Harley does hurt Daisy sometimes. He will bite her lip and not let go and she will be screaming.

I do think that Harley is only playing with Daisy, but he has sharp little baby teeth and they hurt! To her or to you his biting is painful, no matter that his intention is not to inflict pain.. I again recommend a command word that means business for NO.  When you use the command, immediately go and stop him from whatever it is he is doing. Please be consistent and physically stop him every time you use this command. He's a smart little bugger and it will not take long for him to realize that every time he hears that command he must stop what he is doing immediately. Never use this command for anything other than correction of things that are serious. He must not associate it with any type of play time, therefore choose a word that he does not normally hear in everyday conversation. You can choose something like: Harley, halt!; Harley, cease!, Harley, freeze!;, Harley, Harley, chill!; etc. It doesn't matter what the command is as long as it is used only for serious correction and most importantly that it is used every time his behavior is unacceptable. Pups learn by repetition and consistency. Best of luck with Harley.  He is really a well behaved little guy hiding in a stinker's costume.  Just be patient and consistent and you will rewarded with his respect and adoration. He wants to know that you are in control and will always be there for him... Thanks, Deb
