volunteer with a rescue group to work at adoption events near you. You can hold dogs and interview potential adopters. You can also help them out with pickup runs, when they go to shelters to pickup rescues and help with fundraising activities. There's lots you can do and you don't have to foster. Just find a rescue that's near you and contact them to see how you can help.
Shelters are sort of a pound, but there are differences. You have to do research to find the "NO KILL" shelters. Most places will try to place strays with new homes, but some places will not try as hard as others. That is why participating and volunteering your time to help ensure that these guys find a new home can be rewarding. Here I say all this stuff and don't even do it myself. But I will pick up strays and try to find their home, and if not, we have a wonderful place here locally that will house and care for strays.
