Ok, Well, for any who may not know, we recently got or 3rd chi, Sassy. She is 8 months old and according to her previous owners has been trained to puppy pads since early on. Well, Sassy is peeing very, very well on the pup pads, but I can't get her to poop on them. Hershey & Jax do fine and we have lots of pup pads around for use, but Sassy just doesn't seem to want to poop on them. She poops on the floor and has pooped on the sofa twice. I'm wondering what the best way to go about getting her trained to poop on the pads is. I have not had much luck in catching her in the act to move her and show her to the pad. Actually, if she is about to go and you try to get to her, she runs anyway. Any advice or tips would be appreciated on this. We are getting tired of cleaning up poop, especially the times we have accidently stepped in it!
Poopin on the couch eh? That is not good. Strange that she would pee on the pads, but not poop. I think this is where persistence, time and patience will have to prevail. I think if you can catch her, that will be the first step in correcting the situation. Also take into consideration that she is adapting to new surroundings... that can be a bit stressful for a dog. Othere than that, I am not sure what else to tell you since my experience in pads is somewhat limited. Keep us posted on little Sassy's progress.
yep Harley does pretty good about peeing on his pad but he will NOT poop on them. He has done it only about 3 times in his life! I just keep seeing him start to poop and then move him to the pad. Or he will go to the pad but then poop off the side, hahaha.
I wish I had some good advice for you. I have mine trained good to pee on the pads, they will poo on the pads sometimes but other times it is off to the side of the pad. Just keep doing the best you can and keep consistent. If you do see her go on the pad praise like crazy.
I appreciate it guys. We will be persistant for sure. Now it seems she is mostly wanting to poop on the living room floor, around one area, so what I've done is put a pad down in that area and see if she may use it. Then if she does, when she gets to pooping on the pad really well, she might start pooing on the others and I can remove that one. It's kinda in a place that is not a very good area for a pup pad. LoL! We'll see how it goes.
I personally only let my Chi potty outside (which he loves) he was a good one tho, he would bark at me to go potty as a pup, and in emergencies he tries hard to wake me up but usually ends up pooping near the door and feeling very ashamed. He NEVER poo's anywhere near where he pees ( none of my dogs do) i have heard of people training them to poo in litter boxes filled with dirt and grass!
Rylie was funny about pooping on the pads as well. She is finally 100% potty trained, and is almost 1 year old. It take persistance... I used to praise her when she went poop on the pads, and then give her a treat. Also, I would move to to the pad and praise her if she started to poop elsewhere.

Moving the pad would be great, but darn Sassy runs if I move to put the pad under her butt! LoL! I hoped she would use the pad I put right in the living room where she's been pooping most, but when I came home today she had pooped right beside it!
With Radar, we recently had problems with him pooping in the floor during the nights rather than pooping on his pad. But, as it turned out, it wasnt his training, he was just being picky! We have to keep two pads down, side by side. One for him to pee on, and one to poop on. He absolutely will not poop and pee on the same pad. Now, that I have it figured out, I find it quite funny. I just thought you guys would get a kick outta that one.
We may be making progress on this too! For 2 days & nights now, Sassy has not pooped on the floor or anywhere, but I've seen more poop on the pads, so I think she may be pooping on them now! I'm thrilled! I haven't caught her in the act of pooping on the pads, but I think she is. I'll update in a few days or if she has an accident. Wish us luck!
Well, 2 piles of poop on the bedroom floor. Maybe not got it down pat yet, but she will get it. Just gotta look down and try our best NOT to step in it. LoL!
Bella is 5 months now and she struggles with pooing on the pad also but is rather good about potty on the pads, Finally i put down two pads about a foot away from each other that really helped, in the last week she has pooed twice in the kitchen but all the rest of the times on the pads, even at night when i am not watching her. She potties on one pad and poos on the other, i praise with her love when she potties and praise her with love AND a treat when she poos and she knows every time she poos on the pad a treat is coming (it is so funny) so she is not 100% yet but these ideas may help you. Hi there - I'm not an expert at all in this area - I'm working on litter training with Rufus (he goes right in there if he's in his playpen or sleeping crate, but if he's out playing he just squats where he wants, doesn't remember yet how to get back to the litter pan!)
I did have one thought for Sassy, since she's new to your house. How big is your house? Maybe it's overwhelming for her, and she doesn't remember how to get back to the pads? Maybe limiting where she can go in the house until she's reliable in that area, and then expanding her space?
Luv My Rufus, you make a really good point, but for us we live in a really small apartment. We have pads in every room too. I appreciate the help a LOT though. I'm still hoping that giving her time will do the trick and she will start pooping on the pads. Thanks to Everyone!
Chuwee goes outside now with Zip. He hasn't used a pad for probably two months now. But when he did use them, he was like Radar, he would never pee and poop on the same pad. I was getting kind of frustrated at first because he was poop right beside the pad or on the edge of it, but would pee right in the middle of the pad. I think it is more difficult for dogs to poop on pads than it is to pee on them. When they poop, they seem to wander more. Take more steps while doing their business. I would notice that with Chuwee because he would start on the pad, but sometimes when he finished, he would be off the pad just because he would be taking some steps during the process. We started using two or three pads overlaped to make the area larger for him to compensate for his wandering ways, and that helped alot. He would finish on the pads instead of on the floor.
We have a backyard, and Mia goes potty outside pretty well. And we started to get her using puppy pads outside. She pees there pretty well now too... just pooping.. she doesn't poop there AT ALL. If I see her getting ready to poop, and move her close to the pad, she would not poop there. But now I find that she starts to poop in a certain area in the yard... so I think I'll put pads around that area later.
Hmm... any more suggestions??? I hope she'll poop in a certain area SOOON! Easier for clean up!!!

I'm thinking maybe it is because she doesn't want to poop where she pees, but with Herhsey and Jax using all the pads too, I don't know of a way to keep one for her just to poop on. Not even sure if that's it. It's sure frustrating though.
