Harley is MEAN!!

GOsh, my little boy is driving me crazy!  Anytime my hubby hugs me on the couch or anything Harley goes up to him a nd grals and tries to bite his hands. And if i try to push him away he will try to bite me too! I don't know what to do! When we have kids,he WILL bite them....any advice?

Oh no, that is horrible! I was wondering if you and your hubby just moved in together for the first time when you got married? Has the situation changed, and maybe Harley is jealous? Something similar happened to my mom when she brought Chica home, everytime my dad would hug my mom, Chica would growl....but of course my dad thought it was hilarious, and kept doing it, but oddly enough, that worked, because now Chica realizes that she can't control the situation, they aren't going to stop hugging, and he certianly isn't huting mom, so she has accepted it :) Just a thought here, maybe if you can get your hubby to give him a treat when Harley is being good, then Harley will start to think of him in a different light, and then slowly move to the couch situation, then to hugging...if he is just being protective of you, he might start to realize that your hubby isn't so bad, and maybe he actually isn't trying to hurt you:) Hopefully some other members can chip in their two cents. Good Luck with the little guy!

no we have lived together for over 2 years...so that was before Harley was born. Do you think it is because he isn't fixed yet? thts a good idea about the treats. cause when he happens Evan gets really mad and Harley just keeps growling. I am going to try the treat idea.

LOL, sounds to me like the boys are trying to figure out who is the alpha, heheheh, lemme know who wins! Another thing that seems to work for me is my pups are being naughty and nothing else will work,  I wrap my thumb and index finger around their muzzle (they absolutely HATE it, but it doesn't hurt them) and sternly tell them NO!  It is a control thing, and when I do it, I am definately in control :)

Oh Jen!  What a horrible situation!  Harley's not castrated yet?!  Yikes!  This could well be a major part in his behaviour, but even if you get him done now his behaviour has gone unchecked for so long that you are going to have a battle on your hands.  You MUST establish a new pecking order with you and Evan at the head, because I'm not trying to scare you, but if you dont do this NOW your children could end up being extremely hurt, damaged by Harley.  If I were you I would call in a dog trainer as this will be too big a job for someone who's never trained a dog.  If you cant do that then let me know and I'll give you a few tricks to help, but trust me (this time) this needs work; dont skimp, get a trainer in.

OMG!!!!! Last night Harley WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!! He bit Evan soooo hard on his hands and he was bleeding!!!!! I don't know what to do!!!! We couldn't even pick him up without him going CRAZY!!!!!!!! Evan had this huge burn on his hand from work and there was a bandaid on it and Harley ripped the bandaid off and busted his blister burn. Evan was SOO MAD he was ready to take Harley to the pound. Of course i wouldnt let him but i just don't k now why he is doing this!!!! He was biting me too! When Harley is bad Evan puts him on his back...we watched it on Dog Whisperer to make them submit but Harley just goes nuts,so i told Evan not to do that anymore because harley acts like Evan is going to hurt him but he isn't at all. And i tried holding his mouth closed b ut he just bit me. Evan when Harley calmed down and Evan was still holding him down and Harley started licking him, but when Evan put his hand under Harley to pick him up..he bit and grawled again.

Ok, this sounds like it's getting dangerous out of control now.  Jen, d'you think when Harley bites and growls he is playing, or is it malicious?  If it's a game then we can probably fix that, but if it's not a game, if it's serious then that's a completely different situation.  I know you dont have piles of money, and I know only too well how tight money can get and when that happens you're reluctant to spend on anything unecessary, but if this problem is as bad I fear it might be you need to think about if you'd prefer to spend a bit to make this right or if you can live without Harley.  Because if you dont sort this out he could end up biting a child or something and be taken and them put to sleep without your concent.  I'm sorry to sound dramatic, but I think you need to think this through extremely carefully.

Thanks Jess, harley is not playing when he does this. He does play and bite, but this time he was mad becuase of Evan touching me or something and then when he try to push or move harley off of the couch, that is when he growls and bites..because he doesn't want to be moved. I am trying to be calm with him. If i raise my voice, its like he gets more mad. We d onot usually spank....if he pees on the floor, i will show him and give him a little smack on the butt. But we do not abuse him or anything! he acts like we do. Is getting him fixed going to help? Either way, i know i am late but i am still going to get him fixed. We want to have kids soon...so we are looking into a trainer right now.

Oh my gosh, Jen, you have no idea how glad I am to hear you say that!  biggrin  I really think he needs a professional's help.  My guess is that it would be a help to get him fixed, yes, although I would ask your Vet and the trainer once you've found the right one.

Honey, I hope you didn't feel I was being hard on you with my earlier posts, it's just that I saw this coming ages ago, and I am very worried about Harley.

So you're thinking of having children soon then?  How many do you want?  I come from a very large family and have always wanted 7 children, although I'm nowthinking it'll be more like 3 or 4.  lol  James and I are aiming at starting in about 2 years time.

I am having baby fever right now, i never have felt this way before! I didn't want kids for a good long while before i got married. But i just REALLY REALLY want a girl! if i had a girl the first time, i may be just fine with just having one. But Evan wants at least 2 so they can okay together. After seeing my brother growing up i am dreading a boy! My bro was horrible!

UPDATE: Harley has not done anything bad since that incident. I am being super calm with himso he doesn't get mad. When looking for a dog trainer...do you all think that I should get someone to come to our house? What makes me angry is that obviously he is acting this way because of us. On Dog Whisperer, its always the owners who are doing wrong. This sucks!

I know i do not tolerate biting at all, when chico went thru a growling and aggressive change we turned his life upside down. sleeping outside no coming into my room, making him realize he inst the ruler and he DOES have to submit. Im sorry about all this jen! i hope you find a solution :)

Baby Fever huh?!  Yup, can sympsthise with that one!  lol  giggle.gif  I think I was born with it!  lol  My sister in law had a little girl six weeks ago and I am soooo in love with her!  lol  I am really looking forward to having children but there's a lot I want to do first because I've missed a LOT due to being ill for so long.  I need to get an education, and James and I want to go travelling in a couple of years.  We also have to sell our house and buy a bigger one before we start a family as our is so teeny!  lol  Since I want three or four I am hoping for both boys and girls!

As for the trainer I would've guessed having them come to you would be best because then they can view Harley in his natural life.  Of course, it might be easier to meet on neautral ground first though.  I guess you need to find one and see what they suggest.

This week has been crazy for me, but I hope you got the info that I gave Lisa.
I do chihuahua training also.
Hope it helps, biting has to be dealt quickly with harshly. It is the biggest "no, no"
you need to regain your alpha over him, and hubby needs to gain alpha.

Nope! When Evan comes over to kiss me with I am sitting down....Harley will grawl and run over..but i don't let him get on the couch. But he just sits there looking straight at me...like he is waiting for me to tell him its okay. his eyes truley looked like he thought I was being hurt. I pet him and say good boy for not biting and so does Evan....we are still working on it.
