This is probably a fairly basic puppy owner question... from everything I've read, I should not take my puppy out in public until she has had all of her shots... and yet at the same time, she needs a TON of socialization between 8-12 weeks. So how do you accomplish that? How do you expose the puppy to all kinds of new situations and people when you're not supposed to take them out?
Also, along the same lines, at what age will she be fully vaccinated? I know she's getting her first set on shots on May 5th... when can she get the other two sets?
Wow Stacey! You just took the words right out of my mouth, I was honestly just searching for the answer to the same question last night, and unfortunately I didn't find an answer. So, I can't help you, but I'd like to know also. Lisa
Well ladies, I hate to say it, but I think this is another one for ChiDeb. My boys are not very well socialized, I don't have people over at the house to often and they definately do not get around other dogs to often. But I can take them for public walks and they do just fine. So I apologize for not being able to offer advice to you.
It is true that you want your dog fully vaccinated before introducing to other dogs (specially ones that you are not familiar with). I'm not sure about Stacey, but Island Girl, since your dog is coming from Beth, your pup is going to have some socialization "built in" given her surroundings. Stacey, I would also assume the same for dog as well if it comes from a breeder. It will have been exposed to being around several dogs.
I'm really curious as to what ChiDeb has to say about it all.
Well girls, I am so glad you are aware of the importance of socialisation! You'd be surprised just how many people have no idea of the importance. It is VITAL!
The earlier you can start to socialise your puppy the better, but never put it at risk of contracting deseases/illnesses. Pups can be fully vaccinated very young these days. ( I remember the time when it wasn't until about the age of 14 weeks that the vaccines were fully covering the pup! ) I believe it is now about 10/11 weeks. Most breeders should vaccinate (at least the first lot anyway) before the pup leaves for its new home, but until he/she is fully covered you must keep them away from dogs you suspect aren't vaccinated. Socialisation doesn't just stop at the age of 12 weeks, so dont worry. The first year is when a dog will form his/her social skills. Enrolling your pup in a puppy class/general obedience class is the simplest and most fun way. If you can, take your pup with you where ever you go and introduce him/her to people you meet. You will meet millions as people cannot resist saying hello to a puppy! Especially Chihuahua puppies! lol Make sure you socialise your pup with not only other small dogs, all breeds if possible. No breed is too big!
Anyway, sorry that turned into a bit of a novel! lol Hope it helps a bit!
