I have a Short Haired Chi 6lbs and my Friends Friend has a Long Haired Chi 4lbs and we both want to breed our pups is that cross breeding or not right for chihuahuas? I searched it up and I couldnt find anything about it.

Where do you live?  I ask because the UK KC prohibits crossing the coat types like that, but the US doesn't.

I would also be thinking hard about it on account of your sire being 2lbs bigger than the dam.  It would probably result in pups that're too big for the mother to give birth to naturally.

Well, as a Brit I would say yes, that is cross breeding, but I believe this is a common, an acceptable, practise in the US.

I know having a litter with a friend's dog can be a lot of fun, and I hope you dont feel I'm out of place to say this, but are you sure you want to breed for that reason?  I mean, breeding is extremely complicated and it is not unheard of to lose the dam; and can also be, most often are,  huge in Vets bills.  Will you be in a position to look after and take on all the pups if you cant find them homes?  Another factor to take into consideration is are the potential parents good examples of the breed standard?  What're their faults and will they be hereditory?  If I were you I'd be thinking this through very carefully as there are already too many unwanted poor quality pups out there.

I hope you dont object to what I've said, but as someone who is very involved with the breed I feel I would be failing in my duty if I didn't say anything.

I get what you are saying, but I was thinking of sending her to the vet to have the puppies its a cheap vet and they are good I read up on it and it is very difficult or I was going to ask my dogs breeder for some assistance she told me she'll help. I have homes for the pups I know it wont be more than 6 in the litter if it is its fine and I was keeping one and my friend was keeping one to ourselves so Im ok with homes and vet bills I dont have to buy anything else really I save money like crazy all I buy is whatever my pets need. Butr my main reason to breed is because I love my dog and shes not really old but I want.......I hope you get what im saying I have adopted and gave plenty of strays good homes over the years though I just adopted another cat a week ago. But I do hear what you are telling me, I dont want to be hardheaded but Im just facinated with how the babies will come out,Their personality I have so much time on my hands anyway so I can deal with it.

Well it certainly sounds like you've thought about it carefully.  If you are confident you can do it then I say go for it and good luck!  Will you let us know how you get on?

The sire of my female was a shorthair, and the dam is a longhair, Merrie turned out to be a double coat...go figure!  But as Jess points out, there is a lot more to breeding Chi's than most realize, so unless you have help from a reputable breeder, and money saved up for unexpected costs (c-sections for one), it is probably not worth the risk.
