I have come to the conclusion, after nearly a year of living with her, that Ellie is a very sensitive dog. She has a few allergies/sensitivities to certain foods and I suspect a sensitive skin, prone to irritations. So it came as no big surprise when I noticed her neck was a little pinker than I thought normal a few months ago. She didn't seem to notice, it wasn't bothering her, and I was in the middle of changing her food due to allergies she had to the last, so I just assumed it was probably nothing to worry about too much. I kept a vague eye on it and then on Monday night I noticed a very red, I thought perhaps nearly bleeding, spot in the same area. I checked her over and she had two more spots the same in her 'inside elbow' area on her front legs. They were small, like 3-4mm square but still worried me greatly. At first I suspected Mange, but thought that odd as Ellie hasn't even had Fleas yet! Her skin didn't look bad enough for that either, but still a possibility I guess. Next I thought maybe it was Eczema, and I think that's possibly the best guess I have still. I dont think it's due to something like her collar or clothing rubbing as they're both soft, smooth materials, haven't been washed recently enough for it to be the conditioner/detergeant, and she's not had any problems like this before with either. So, I thought I would take her to the Vet on Wedenesday and when I went to check it this morning the spots had nearly gone! The colouring is vastly reduced, but still a little there.
Well Jess-e-girl... the first thing that comes to mind is that she recently got a new collar right? And I also recall a new harness. Does the harness cross the areas under her elbows that you speak about?
If it is a new collar, then it is possible that it can irritate her skin a bit. That is the only thing I can think of at the moment. I see in your post that you don't think it is related to the collar.. so maybe that is out.
Ok, another thing I just thought about is table scraps, if she gets some perhaps there is something that is not agreeing with her.
If the spots are not getting bigger or redder, or chronic in nature, then I would not think it an emergency, but perhaps the next time Ellie has a check up, may mention it to the vet.
I am going to try putting Ellie's new collar on her again today to see how her skin reacts, but I'd be surprised if it is that as the marks are also on her legs and of course the collar goes nowhere near that area! Although, I kind of hope it is something like that or her harness as a skin condition would be a much bigger problem! lol
I'm thinking maybe I'll take her to hte Vet on saturday if I can. I'll post again if I do to say what they thought.
Sattie had a good one with the collar and scraps suggestion, but has little jelly bean had any vaccines or updates on them recently? I keep on hearing of this problem with chis after they've been vaccinated...
Nope, no vaccinations since she was a pup. I cant think what caused it, but the spots have now gone completely. If it happens again I will take her to the Vet, but for now her skin looks the same as before.
I am shopping around for another harness, but the problem is that they're all too big! The one she has now is for an xs puppy and even tightened up completely it's too big! Really, I need to be able to try them on her before buying, but most places that sell them aren't even in the same country, let alone in a shop nearby! The UK just doesn't compare to the US when it comes to Chi accessories.
