White-capped Pionus aka White Crowned Pionus, White Cap: The White-crowned Parrot, Pionus senilis, is a small parrot which is a resident breeding species from eastern Mexico to western Panama. It is found in lowlands and foothills locally up to 1600 m altitude in forest canopy and edges, and adjacent semi-open woodland and second growth. The White-crowned Parrot is 24 cm long and weighs 220 g. The adult male has a white forehead and crown, the feature which, likened to an old man's white hair, gave rise to the specific name senilis. The throat is white, and the rest of the head, neck and breast are dull dark blue. The belly is light green, and the upperparts are dark green, with a yellow-olive shoulder patch. In flight, the blue underwings and red vent are conspicuous features. The female White-crowned Parrot is similar to the male, but the blue plumage fades into scaling on the lower breast and the shoulder patch is duller. Young birds have little blue on the head and neck or red on the undertail, and the crown feathers are green edged with white.
HP, here is a little blurb on what I read online about them . I have a friend that has a bird shop. She breeds and sells many birds. I have been talking to her over the past month or so about the baby lovebirds I have. She has helped me alot with them. Anyways, I noticed these two birds being so quiet in her shop compared to all the others that were screeching and carrying on as usual. I asked her about them and she told me they were WC Pionus. She told me alot about them, how quiet they were etc. This guy was sitting on her shoulder, climbed down her arm, walked across the counter top, climbed up my arm, and snuggled himself into the front of my shirt like a baby. I fell in love! Took hubby down a few weeks later to see him, and voila! Welcome home Murlin!..lol He is great fun. He is so quiet compared to the lovebirds. You wouldn't know he was here. He is making some more noises now, but no screeching etc. He loves to get on the couch and wander back and forth between hubby and I playing with our hair, glasses, whatever he can put in his beak..lol She told me he is about seven months old, I think. She told me when he came home, but I was so excited I forgot what she said!
deb, don't you worry girl, Chuwee reminds EVERYONE who is the boss and number one son in this house!..lol
Wow newf... that sounds like the kind of bird I need to have!!! I think I would have fell in love when he cuddled with me too... they are so ingenious that way!!!
i have always wanted a bird. But my fiance says that they are hard to take care of bc they make messes and make lots of noises, lol. But i still want one!!!!
thanks guys. We are really having alot of fun with him. He is quite the character.
Harleyslove, to tell you the truth..he makes hardly any noise..and when he does its mostly clicking and whistling noises. The baby lovies make alot more noise than he does..AND more mess. The reason we got him is because the lady told us how quiet they are and such..and she was right..
