Interesting

1. Jessie

Jessie is short for Jessica, which means "the rich one." Although Jessica sounds rather upper class, Jessie sound more down-to-earth, and would be a good name for a pretty, friendly dog who likes people.

2. Molly

Molly is an Irish name that means "Mary." A dog named Molly would be a down-to-earth kind of pet that you could rely on to be friendly and affectionate and welcoming to strangers.

3. Maggie

You could name any female dog Maggie, but it's an especially good name for a white dog, because it's short for Margaret, which means "pearl." If you shortened the name Maggie to Mag, you'd be complimenting your dog; you could say it was short for Magnificent.

4. Sadie

Although this sounds like a down-to-earth name, it's short for Sarah, which means "princess." Sadie can also be short for Mercedes, which is a lovely Spanish name meaning "mercy."

5. Lucy

Not only does this name mean "light," it also has a few associations with show business. "I Love Lucy" was a popular sit-com in the 1960s starring the madcap Lucille Ball. And Lucy is the girl who likes to tease Charlie Brown in Peanuts cartoons. So Lucy would be a great name for a fun dog who can be a bit of a comedienne.

6. Sasha

Does your dog help you relax at the end of a long day, and encourage you to get outside and exercise? Of course she does. So the perfect name for your dog is Sacha, which means "helpmate."

7. Lady

Lady is a popular dog's name and was the name of the ****er spaniel in the 1956 Disney movie "Lady and the Tramp." The name Lady is also used as a female title of nobility, given to someone regarded as having superior status.

8. Abby

Abby is short for Abigail, which means "joyous one" in Hebrew. So if you have a happy dog who lifts your spirits and makes you feel good, this might be the ideal name for her.

9. Chelsea

Although Chelsea is a suburb of New York, it's even better known as an upscale neighborhood of London, England. In the 1960s, Chelsea girls were known for their trendy fashions and active, fun social lives. So if your dog is fun, well-mannered polite like English people, and very social, Chelsea could be the name for her!

10. Bonnie

Have you ever heard Scottish people refer to a pretty woman as a "bonnie lass"? Since it means "pretty," Bonnie would be a fitting name for a pretty dog who's good-natured and friendly.

1. Max

Max is one of those friendly names that offers an instant familiarity. The name means "the greatest," and is a good name for a sociable dog.

2. Jake

The name Jake sounds strong, yet friendly – no wonder it makes it into our list of Top 10 most popular dog names consistently!

3. Zack

People names are becoming more and more popular for dogs, as the name Zack proves. Zack is such a popular name that it makes it into our list of Top 10 male dog names in the United States.

4. Bailey

Dogs are very protective of the people in their lives, and of their homes. Sound like your dog? Then you may want to name him Bailey which comes from the word meaning "trusted guardian of others property."

5. Cody

The name Cody comes from an old English word meaning "cushion." So although Cody sounds like a good name for a tough, no-nonsense dog, it could also be right for a dog who really appreciates being patted and hugged.

6. Buddy

Since dogs are our best friends, our "buddies," it makes sense to name a dog Buddy. Buddy was also the name of a famous 1950s rock 'n' roll musician, Buddy Holly.

7. Rusty

Rusty is a good name for a dog who's the color of rust: orange, red, or brown, and all shades in between. As a dog's name, it has a nice, homey sound to it, and should be easy for any dog to learn.

8. Casey

If your dog is a watchdog by inclination then Casey is a good choice of a name. The name Casey comes from Ireland and its meaning is brave and watchful, and it was the name of a warrior who was reputed to never sleep.

9. Sam

Sam is short for Samuel, which is an old Hebrew name that means "heard by God" or "God listens." Sam can also be short for Samantha, and it can be changed to Sammy. But most people would likely just call their dog Sam or Sammy.

10. Jack

Jack is actually a different form of the name John, which means "God is good." As a dog's name, Jack sounds quite masculine, and so it would be good for a big, sturdy dog or a little dog who believes himself to be big.

I love the name Bailey.  I've never named a pet that, but I really like it.

I thought about calling Ellie Molly!  And my Weimaraner called Tara I nearly called Sasha!  I know another Weimaraner, Tara's daughter actually, called Bonnie!  I really like the name Abby, but think I'll save it for one of my own daughters!

Oh, and my name is Jessica, but I'm not a dog...(I hope! )

Love, Jess x
