Oy, the barking!

Ok, I never did as I should have in training my chis.  Now the barking is so out of hand.   I have the 3 chis now, so I'm looking for tips of how to teach them to stop barking when I say to.  They bark at the least little sound outside, doesn't matter if it's day or night.  They just keep it up too.  We yell at them to stop over and over again and that gets us nowhere.  I've heard maybe trying to shake a can of coins or something that makes a loud noise while saying Quiet or Stop Barking really loudly.  I've also heard trying squirting them with water.  Any tips will be much appreciated.  We have neighbors on both sides of our apartment and I am really worried about them complaining.  Thanks!

I have used the water squirting method with mine and it seems to work...most of the time....they see the water bottle now and stop. If you squirt them and they stop praise them for stopping (so I was told). I haven't been to consistent using it tho cause I live in the country so the barking only annoys my hubby and I. Also I say SHHHHHH!!!! instead of shouting cause I read that they think you are joining in on the barking with them when you shout. Thats all I got for you.

I've been working with my guys using the word "enough".  That way they learn it's ok to let me know there is something there but they don't have to keep barking.  It's working slowly, but it's working.  They used to run across the road barking at the neighbors, now I can at least get them to not run across the road and most times they'll shut up.  It's a slow process.

I think this is a very common problem, and I myself have a similar problem with Ellie.  She will bark at other dogs when we're out and about.  Grrrrr!    But if you're at home it should be relatively easy to fix.  It sounds like you have two very good ideas, with the water bottle and thre coin bottle thing, I would use one of those if I were you.  Be consistant and you should have peace and quiet in no time.  In fact, it'll probably just take a couple of times and they'll recognise the can/bottle and be quiet as soon as they see it!  Let us know which you decide to use and how it works.  Good luck sweetie!

I have a really bad problem with Biscuit whens hes in the backyard, he likes to bark at all the birdies!

Its funny that you (Luv2chis) mention that they think you are joining in with you, because Ive noticed when I point at biscuit and say "NO" he just kinda looks at me and I KNOW he is just laughing at me in his little head! So after I say a FIRM NO a few times, I will come off the patio and start walking to wards him. At this point, its is a VERY FUN GAME. He likes to run and hide and chase me around the back yard! He LOVES IT!!! Hes thinks his mom came down to help him chase the birds!

Thats the only time I have a probalem when he is barking, but im finding it really difficult to get him to take me seriously!

Thanks to you all.  I'm gonna try the water bottle trick while saying 'Enough!" and see if in time that will work.  I will be sure to praise well when they do obey me.

Radar mainly barks when someone comes over, which is very annoying considering how loud his bark is! I have got Radar to where he will calm down some when I give him a stern "ENOUGH!". Which I also snap my fingers at him, and he will usually stop what he is doing. I guess it takes away his focus or something. But, we have never really had problems out of Radar, he seems to mind very well.

i have no idea But Peanut does the same thing and if were in the car at a stop light he will bark at the car in the next lane i keep trying to tell him that they are stoped like we are and they arent buging us but he doesnt seem to get it. i also tryed the watter bottle but he just runs away still barking so if u have a Chi with a mind of his own water may not work. but i also dont mind the barking inless he goes on and on with it and he has and does drag it out for at least 4 or 5 minutes

I'll keep everyone posted, but I think the water bottle trick just may be working.  I've only sprayed them a few times and I can already tell a big difference in the barking and running for the door problem.  I'm gonna keep at it steady.  I'm excited that I may have found a solution!

I know Deb!  I am SOOOO excited, I have to tell you all what happened tonight.  Ok, So I've been working on the barking problem with the spray bottle, as you all know.  So tonight my Landlord came by for rent money, I always dread it because Jax ALWAYS barks at him and nips at his ankles.  Well, Jax is now very aware of the water bottle and I hardly have to say much now to stop his bark, or sometimes just picking up the water bottle works.  So tonight I was so proud that when the Landlord came, Jax didn't bark once!  He didn't nip at the Landlord either!  He actually jumped on his lap and seemed to want the Landlord to pet him.  I was completely shocked!   My Landlord was as well.  I have never been so proud of Jax as that moment.  I praised him and gave him a treat.  He is even staying away from the door when people come in and go out.  He used to run out the door barking like crazy, he is not doing it now!  I am still keeping up the training, it takes a spray or two to work on Hershey & Sassy, but I am certainly as proud as can be of my Jax.

Hey wow, that is great news!  Well done, it sounds like this method has worked 'text book' style on Jax!  What a good boy!  I'd imagine that in time it'll also work with Hershey and Sassy.  Keep up the good work honey!

Too cool about Jax!!  Glad to hear that is working :)

I also do the "Enough" thing, and I do the two fingers to the chest thing I saw on The Dog Whisperer.  Oddly enough, if I'm not close enough to do the two fingers, I can just point at him and he gets the message.  I did it one time, and it worked, so did it the next time.  I don't know *why* it's working, but hey....why look a gift horse in the mouth?!?!  lol

I'm really surprized water didn't work,if you buy 3 small muzzels, but you have to catch them and put them on each time they bark and tell them no barking! this worked with my most difficult guys, I have 6 and a golden retriever, and no one barks unless there is an really good reason, not even for the door. hope it helps.

Both my sisters have barkers, and my baby sister was getting complaints of her barking dog from her neighbors. A friend recomended this product and she tried it. It worked. My other sister tried it on her mini pin, and it worked. Here is the link if you would like to try it.

Linda, I think I've seen this before, and it is such a great idea I think!  It's effective yet harmless, a good gentle way to train your pup!  Thanks so much for posting the link sweetie!  Mwah!

Another Chi mom that I know of in our area told me to put pennies in an empty pepsi can and shake them when Chimi barks and wont stop. It works... he get so scared that he stops, but It's so loud that I'm afraid I'll give the poor baby a heart attack!! So I hav'nt done it in a while. LOL.
