worried about cough

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this little issue im worried about. You see one of my chi's, Chilupa, seems to do something that sorta scares me when she wakes up, and she only does it when she wakes. She seems to cough sort of, and seems to have a bit of trouble breathing. It dosnt seem to serious but u never want to be to unsure. Does anyone have any idea wat it might be? I thought maybe a reverse sneeze.. Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that we got her in Southern California and she might not be used to our Victoria BC weather (a huge change in temp and humidity). Worse case scenerio something to do with her trachia. Im taking her to the vet on monday but im just worried cause she seems to do this coughing/honking thing everytime she wakes up... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.... Thanks

odd way to wake

Hmmm, that is kind of strange. I am not sure what it could be. Merrie reverse sneezes after she drinks too much water too quickly, but that is the only time that she does it. It kinda sounds like she is honking....that is the only way I can think to explain it. I am sure that some of the other members will have some better input for you tho.

RE: worried about cough

It sounds like Reverse Sneezing to me, although better to be safe than sorry, so ask the Vet when you see them, yeah.  I dont know one Chi that doesn't do it!

I guess it could also be the change in climate like you mentioned.

Sorry I cant be of more help!  hmm  Let us know what the Vet says, k?

Im pretty sure its reverse sneeze, i read a web page that suggested massage the neck when the dog does that helps and i tried it. And its seems to help her stop caughing. I will deff tell u guys tho wat the vet says, but im pretty sure shes ok.

Phew!  That's a relief!  I've also heard that massaging the neck helps to ease it, another trick I've learnt, and can vouch for, is distracting the dog when it happens.  Just getting their attention onto something else usually shocks them out of it.

Hope it helps!  wink
