the other dog...help!

Hey everyone I need some advise. As you know Im getting my little baby chi girl in July. My concern though, is in regards to my dog I already own. I have a 6year old female Australian Cattle Dog mix, as well as two cats. My Aussie dog (Maddie) is tolerent of the cats, and is ok with some other dogs shes met. The problem is she was never well socialized as a puppy and she seems to have a domince problem. Im just worried she might be vicious towards my puppy (although whenever we put stuffed animals around that look like puppys shes very sweet and motherly towards them). When I spoke to a vet she suggested asking the breeder to send something with the puppy's scent on it to me so my dog Maddie can get used to the puppy's smell before she even comes to live with us.
Does anyone else have any suggestions on what to do now and when the puppy arrives to prevent or help any problems with my Aussie dog and the puppy?
PS. Im just waiting to hear back from a dog trainer who deals with dog agrressive dogs (supposedly she can work wonders) her website is... http://www.naughtydogge.com/

Sounds like your vet has a good idea, I would definately try that. Deb is our multi chi (dog) expert here and I know she would have some good advice.. so does Beth (WCC).

All breeds are different and I know nothing about the Aus.Cattle dog.. I have been quite successful at adding new chi babies to our family with no problems.. Chis recognize their own kind and are a "clannish" bunch! lol
I always bring the newbie in and put him in his playpen..(I used a mesh wall child's playpen for my babies.)  All the guys get to see, smell, and check out the new kid without contact.. I sit in the floor with my guys and give them lots of love and attention while talking to and touching the baby thru the mesh pen.  I move on to letting the baby down on the floor with us the next day and still continue to give my guys lots of love and attention.. They will sniff, shove, and roll the baby over... but have never attempted to hurt a pup. I never leave the baby unattended with the others. If I can't see them, then the baby goes back in his playpen until I can...The pup sleeps in his pen where they can all see, smell and get accustomed to him.. By the time the baby is about 4 months old, he's running with the pack...lol and usually driving them crazy!!!  Take a look at some of our pics of Kona takin' on the big guys around here...lol  We also have a pug and a yorkie who accept all newcomers as well.  Hope this helps you..Deb

My advice is be very careful with an ACD, they are like heelers in the sence that they are bred to be in conrol (cattle) so sometimes in their minds, they think they need to herd other animals, I had a heeler that thought he should herd children. don't leave him alone with your chi ever! I trained my English mastiff by the chis being up, because of her size, same idea though, she could come and meet them and snuggle them with her head, but because they were on the couch with me, they were safe, and the mastiff learned eventually that when they were on the floor, they were not fair game to rough house with , and I was watching, if I use the command (AhAh) she will stop in her tracks. (I didn't teach her NO, as she is a protection dog, and that's the first thing someone would say to a dog that is going after them). Make it clear from day one, puppy is not your chew toy, and needs space to not be walked on. that's my advice.
